The secret behind Met Gala 2025's stunning decor? A Kerala firm crafted the eco-friendly floral blue carpet

As the glittering stars of the fashion world ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala 2025, few realized they were walking on a piece of Indian craftsmanship. Beneath the couture gowns and bold tuxedos lay a 63,000-square-foot carpet—deep blue and sustainably crafted—supplied by a design house from Kerala: Neytt by Extraweave. For the third consecutive year, this homegrown Indian firm has brought its artisanal excellence to one of the world’s most prestigious fashion events, quietly becoming a Met Gala staple.

About Neytt by Extraweave
Headquartered in Alappuzha, a coastal town often called the "Venice of the East," Neytt by Extraweave is helmed by Sivan Santhosh and Nimisha Srinivas. While the brand itself is a recent player in the global luxury design scene, its roots go back more than a century. In 1917, Santhosh’s grandfather, K. Velayudhan, established Travancore Mats and Matting Company, laying the foundation for Kerala’s carpet-making industry. Building on this legacy, Velayudhan Santhosh launched Extraweave Pvt. Ltd . in the early 2000s, which would go on to supply rugs and carpets to premium retailers across the globe.

At the 2025 Met Gala, Neytt’s contribution went far beyond aesthetics. The theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” emphasized heritage, elegance, and subversion—and Neytt’s carpet echoed these values. Woven from sisal fibers ethically sourced from Madagascar, the blue-and-gold carpet was not only visually arresting but also 100% biodegradable and eco-conscious. Floral barricades of golden daffodils lined the edges, and mirrored installations created a surreal, floating garden effect—all resting on a carpet rooted in Indian legacy.

But Neytt’s path to the Met wasn’t born of overnight fame. With decades of craftsmanship behind it, the company has invested in cutting-edge global technology. Their production facility in Kerala houses spinning machinery imported from Ireland, dyeing machines from Italy, coating systems from the U.S., and weaving units from Belgium. This blend of Indian heritage and global innovation has helped Neytt carve out a unique identity: marrying sustainable design with luxury aesthetics.

Neytt made its Met Gala debut in 2022 and quickly established itself as an integral part of the event’s evolving visual storytelling. In 2023, the brand collaborated with legendary Japanese architect Tadao Ando to design a red carpet inspired by the late Karl Lagerfeld—a minimalist yet powerful tribute to the iconic fashion designer. That installation marked a turning point, placing Neytt firmly on the global design map.

This year’s Met Gala also marked a milestone for India’s presence on the global fashion stage. Prominent designer Manish Malhotra made his debut alongside Bollywood icons like Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, and Diljit Dosanjh. Returning veterans such as Priyanka Chopra, Isha Ambani, and Natasha Poonawalla continued to dazzle, while Sabyasachi brought regal drama, designing SRK’s ensemble and walking the blue carpet himself.

Beyond its fashion frenzy, the Met Gala remains a critical fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Originally launched in 1948 as a high-society New York event, it evolved into the ultimate celebrity spectacle under the stewardship of Vogue editor Anna Wintour in the 1990s. This year, the museum projected a staggering $31 million in funds raised, underscoring the gala’s growing cultural and economic power.
