A young man and woman are fighting for their lives after a stabbing near a deserted bus stop in Delhi Cantonment on Sunday night. Police say 20-year-old Amit stabbed 19-year-old Vijaylaxmi, then stabbed himself. Both were rushed to hospital and remain in critical condition.
The incident took place around 9:30pm at Kirby Place, along a lonely stretch of road with fast-moving vehicles but no pedestrians or open shops. When The Times of India visited the site the following day, dried blood marked the ground. Only one man stood nearby at the near-empty bus stop.
According to the police, the two had known each other for about a year. They were both employed at shops in the Sadar Bazar area, where their acquaintance began.
Surendra Choudhary, DCP (South West), confirmed the two were friends, but tensions had been growing.
"On enquiry, we found that the youth and the woman had known each other for the past year and were friends. Due to some dispute between them, the youth stabbed her in the neck and abdomen and then attempted to harm himself by stabbing himself in the stomach," he said, as reported by TOI.
A police officer said Amit is currently on a ventilator. Investigators are waiting for his condition to improve before questioning him.
CCTV footage from earlier in the day shows the two walking through Sadar Bazar around 4pm. At first, the interaction appears casual — they are talking, and at one point, Vijaylaxmi pauses to tie her hair.
Moments later, things shift. Amit is seen holding her arm and pushing her towards a parked car. The argument continues beneath a tree, though they eventually walk off together, seemingly calm again.
The evening passed uneventfully until around 9:30pm, when the violent altercation erupted near the Kirby Place bus stop.
Vijaylaxmi’s 25-year-old sister told TOI she last saw the pair just a couple of hours before the attack.
“I saw them together in Sadar Bazar during the evening around 7pm. Everything seemed normal between them. I knew they were friends, so I didn’t think much of it. We expected her to come home at the usual time. But the next thing we heard was from the hospital about her being critically injured. An auto driver who took her there called us and we rushed to her immediately,” she said.
The family has also claimed that Amit had been troubling Vijaylaxmi for some time.
Police say they are waiting for her to regain consciousness in the ICU so they can record her statement.
An officer involved in the investigation revealed that the two hadn’t spoken in recent days and had been arguing.
“They hadn’t been getting along and hadn’t spoken for a few days. The youth called her to meet him on Sunday, and during their interaction, a heated argument broke out, following which he stabbed her,” the officer said.
Amit has been booked under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted murder. Police from Delhi Cantt station are continuing their probe.
As both individuals remain hospitalised, the motive behind the attack — and the events leading to it — remain partially unclear. Authorities are hoping that once either party regains consciousness, more details will emerge.
