The Post-Brexit edge: Why Ireland is fast becoming a preferred study destination for international students

Send Push
In recent years, Ireland has become a popular choice for international students due to its top-notch educational system, excellent employment opportunities, and welcoming multicultural environment. For students who wish to study in English and still enjoy the advantages of being in the EU, Ireland offers a distinct advantage as the only English-speaking nation in the EU following Brexit. Ireland has always been very popular amongst the students from India and other Asian countries due to its accessible post-study employment opportunities and expanding industrial ties.

The UK’s exit from the European Union, commonly known as Brexit, changed the dynamics of studying in Europe. Although the reforms primarily impacted students in the EU, they also had an indirect impact on the choices of international students. Ireland's appeal increased when the UK tightened visa regulations and raised tuition for students from the EU. Ireland emerged as a preferred destination among students for offering international-quality education along with the flexibility to live, travel, and work across Europe.

Ireland offers several practical advantages that are making it a top choice for international students:

1. High-Quality education
Irish universities are internationally recognized for academic excellence and research. Seven of them rank in the top 3% globally. Institutions such as Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and University of Galway are known for programs in technology, business, life sciences, and social sciences.

2. Welcoming and safe student environment
Ireland is considered one of the safest countries in Europe and is known for its friendly, inclusive communities. With low crime rates and strong student support services, it provides a secure and comfortable environment for international students.

3. Post-study work opportunities

Ireland offers attractive post-study work options for international students. Under the Third Level Graduate Scheme, students who complete a Bachelor’s (honours) degree are eligible for up to 1 year of stay-back, while those who complete a Master’s degree can stay for up to 2 years. During this period, graduates can work without the need for an employment permit, allowing them to gain valuable international work experience and explore long-term career prospects in Ireland.

4. Access to Top Global Companies

Ireland hosts the European headquarters of several global companies, including Google, Meta (Facebook), Apple, Pfizer, and Intel. The country is also home to 50% of the world’s top financial firms, making it a thriving job market for students in tech, finance, pharma, and related fields.

5. Affordability and ROI

● Tuition fees:
Undergraduate – €18,000 to €30,000 per year
Master’s – €14,000 to €28,000 per year

● Living costs: €7,000 to €12,000 per year depending on location

● Part-time work: Up to 20 hours per week during term, 40 hours during holidays

These numbers make Ireland more affordable than other English-speaking countries like the UK or the US, while still offering comparable education and career outcomes.

6. Freedom to Travel
While Ireland is not part of the Schengen Zone, students studying there can apply separately for a Schengen visa, which enables travel across 27 European countries. This added mobility enriches their international experience and opens up additional avenues for networking, internships, and career growth across the continent.

Ireland has seen a surge in Indian student enrolment in recent years over 7,000 Indian students are currently studying in Ireland — up from around 3,000 in 2018. This marks over 120% increase in just five years. Fields such as data analytics, business, health sciences, and artificial intelligence are particularly popular.

To help make education more accessible, Ireland offers a number of scholarships specifically for
international students:

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships (GOI-IES)– Covers full tuition + €10,000 stipend.
The Walsh Fellowship– Supports research in food, agriculture, and rural development.
Irish Research Council Scholarships– For postgraduate researchers.
NUI Galway International Student Scholarships– Tuition support for international students.
Centenary Scholarship Programme– For undergraduate and postgraduate students from specific countries, including India.

Ireland's dedication to foreign education aims to support students' success rather than merely draw them in. Irish schools prioritize the well-being and employability of their students through everything from cultural integration programs and mental health assistance to robust student unions and committed internship services.

Ireland, which has always been renowned for its academic excellence, has become even more popular after Brexit. For Indian and international students seeking a future-focused education with access to European opportunities, Ireland is proving to be more than just an alternative to the UK—it’s a smart, long-term investment in their global career journey.
