He went missing at Kedung Tumpang Beach in East Java, located next to the Indonesian island of Bali. Roni, who originally comes from Medan in North Sumatra, studies at the English Village in the town of Pare in East Java, and on the morning of the accident he had visited the coast with 15 fellow English students.

The water was initially calm and some students even enjoyed a swim - but the sea began to swell minutes later while several students were posing for snaps on the rocks. Since Roni’s disappearance, choppy conditions at sea are said to have been complicating the search operation. A spokesperson for the National Search and Rescue Agency said: “The waves have been between 6.5 and 14 feet (two and four metres) in height, creating a huge obstacle for our team.”
