I spent two hours in Uniqlo's changing rooms and these are my top Autumn picks

As the weather cools and autumn creeps in, one area I realised my wardrobe is really lacking in is good quality basics and layering-friendly pieces. One retailer I always turn to when I need to create a capsule wardrobe of sorts is - and their new selection is perfect for anyone looking to update their wardrobe for the chillier months.

The Japanese retailer has gained huge popularity in the UK for its casualwear and accessories for men and women, including viral sensations like its . But beyond its bestselling accessory, the brand also boasts a collection of versatile and cosy pieces that slot effortlessly into any wardrobe.

I recently took a trip in-store and spent two hours trying on and I have found a number of pieces that will have you ready for the season ahead. From coats - both stylish and practical - to soft, snuggly knits and swishy satin skirts - here are nine items you should consider adding to your wardrobe.

This is a staple that will fast become one of your wardrobe's hardest working pieces for their ability to be worn with so many different outfits. It features a smooth, glossy fabric, with the bias cut allowing it to drape beautifully and flatter curves.

This is a piece that’s perfect for day-to-night transitions and also comes in but I thought the navy looked so rich and striking against the orange. And the biggest bonus for me is that the fabric isn’t sheer, as can often be the case with some other high street options.

For those on the hunt for a sporty yet stylish layer, the is a great option. Made from 100% lambswool, it offers that off-duty look we see all over , paired with athleisure leggings and trainers.

Coming in natural, grey, black and navy, it’s got a really with fine tipping at the cuffs which give it an overall more polished look. It’s perfect for a laid-back day or weekend brunch and can be dressed up with jeans or even a satin skirt for a high-low mix.

It was the muted blue hue that first drew me to this , but I certainly stuck around for its warmth and practicality. With a high fill power of 750+, it offers premium insulation, and the seamless design ensures maximum warmth and wind resistance. The fleece-lined pockets are a bonus for keeping hands toasty, and the water-repellent finish protects against light rain, making it the perfect all-weather companion.

It is on the more expensive side at , however, my dad is a big believer in spending more on a coat if it’s one that will serve you a long time, which I certainly think this one will. It comes in sizes XXS to XXL, and is available in six really easy to wear colours. I particularly like the hood and cushioned collar that delivers extra protection from the elements around the neck.

Cashmere Crew Neck Jumper - £79.90 image

There’s nothing quite like the luxurious feel of cashmere, and this does not disappoint. Available in a whopping 24 colours, there’s bound to be one for everyone, but I went for the classic grey, which pairs beautifully with just about anything.

It’s incredibly soft, lightweight yet warm, and has a modern, slightly oversized silhouette. At , it’s a steal for 100% cashmere - by comparison, costs £89 and only comes in 13 shades.

Lastly, I wanted to include this dress because, while it’s not totally for me, I think other shoppers are going to love it. This offers a comfortable fit with a soft, brushed cotton-blend fabric, making it ideal for casual outings or even the office. It has a flattering fit-and-flare design with a cinched waist, creating a subtle hourglass silhouette.

Available in it suits any occasion, and the addition of pockets is a huge win. I found the cut less flattering for my particular body shape, but that’s not to say it wouldn’t suit someone else amazingly. Pair with some tights and a pair of boots, and you’re good to go.
