Gary Anderson has dispelled any inkling he might retire soon after beating Michael Smith at the , claiming pundits have 'no clue' when it comes to darts.

The Scottish star defeated Smith 2-1 in round one of the competition, setting up a showdown with Mike De Decker on Thursday evening in Leicester. He was feeling pleased after his dominant victory, but his demeanour changed almost immediately when asked about retirement.

The 53-year-old launched into a fierce rant during the press conference post-game, after one reporter asked if retirement was still "in the very distant future" for him. wasn't too pleased as he criticised pundits who watch people play darts, instead of playing the game themselves.

The Scot said: "This is what happens when you work for press and TV. You've not got a frigging clue. I'll stop when I want to stop, you have not got a clue honestly. You just think what you see is what you get, you've not got a clue. People have lives, do you have a life? Do you have a life, do you have a life? Yeah, well it's nice to have a life, but if you are doing this constantly then you wouldn't have a life.

"I know what I can do, I know what I can't do. And, at the end of the day, like you say, your pundits, you've not got a clue. That's why they're sitting on their a**** talking about darts instead of playing darts."

'The Flying Scotsman' has dealt with retirement rumours previously, as he claimed in 2021 that he would win another major title before he decided to put the darts away for good. At the time, Anderson said: "I will win another for sure! I have that hunger and desire back and despite everything, I still love playing this game.

"I'm old school and just want to play darts the way it should be played and I want to prove a point to all the doubters but more importantly to myself.

"I really savour the combat on the big stages in the big tournaments. In the last few months I managed to get to the two biggest finals at the World Matchplay and World Championship without playing well. I truly believe if I can get to anywhere near my best, I will be a major threat."

Anderson is yet to clinch another World Championship, with his last triumph coming in 2016 as he claimed back-to-back titles following his 2015 trophy. He has won the European Darts Grand Prix this year, as well as the Players Championship in Wigan.

While another major title still looks to be in the distant horizon, Anderson doesn't appear to be giving up on his dream yet – and he's made that abundantly clear.
