Speaking to , Sustainable Living Association expert Kellie said that lawns should be fertilised during the autumn, when grass and other plants are less likely to receive the necessary nutrients. Epsom salts are one of the best fertilisers for the job, the expert added. The salts are typically used in baths, as they are well-known for helping ease bodily pain, promote bloodflow and help with digestion, among other qualities. Those benefits come from the mixture of compounds with which the salts - known as magnesium sulfate - are packed. They include magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen, all compounds that Kellie said also happen to be vital for helping nourish plants when nutrients aren't otherwise naturally available. She said: "Have you heard that Epsom salts are some of the best DIY autumn lawn fertilisers?"

"They contain sulfur and magnesium, both of which are compounds that grass and many other plants favour. These are some of the many benefits of using Epsom salts as best lawn fertiliser and it’s no wonder people have been using these salts for many years." Scattering the salts on the lawn will allow grass to digest the vital compounds, the most important of which is magnesium.

Magnesium is a vital ingredient in the photosynthesis process, and the extra supply coming from Epsom salts will enhance plants' ability to store energy through the autumn. Plants typically draw magnesium from the soil, and scattering the salts where their roots enter the ground will ensure that they can absorb more than enough of the nutrient.

Lawns fed Epsom salts before winter will be able to store energy through the harsher seasons and come out looking much healthier when spring rolls around. People will need to take care not to overuse the salts, however, as an overabundance of magnesium will prevent plants from absorbing another vital nutrient - calcium - without which they struggle to grow.
