Clean stained grouting so it looks like new without using bleach or vinegar

Send Push

The space between tiles, known as grout, can become discoloured and dirty without regular cleaning. However, there's a straightforward method to make it gleaming white once more.

In areas with lots of footfall like bathrooms and kitchens, it's crucial to wash tiles weekly, because the grime in grout can attract mould and reduce hygiene levels in the home.

John Klee, a specialist from Big Bathroom Shop, has revealed a simple recipe for an effective tile cleaner made from two common household items. Sharing his advice, John said: "Hydrogen peroxide can be used to remove tough grout stains, mould and mildew. Spray it on the affected area and leave for a few minutes and scrub with your choice of brush."

He advised: "You may have to repeat this step if it's a stubborn stain. No success? Make a baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste and apply to the grout lines, scrub and rinse with warm water.", reports the Express.

Why does this work? image

Well, baking soda is alkaline, which helps to dissolve acidic stains such as grease or soap scum that can gum up your tile grout. Moreover, its abrasive properties mean it can physically dislodge deeply embedded dirt.

Hydrogen peroxide serves as a natural bleaching agent capable of brightening up discoloured grout, eliminating the unsightly brown stains that mould or mildew can leave behind.

Another key benefit of hydrogen peroxide is its antibacterial quality, ensuring that bacteria and spores are eradicated, helping to keep mould at bay after you've cleaned up.

Method

Start by prepping the area: give the tiles a good wipe with a damp cloth and follow up with a hoover, this will help shift any dirt that's embedded in the grout.

Whip up your cleaning potion until it's got the consistency of a paste and get it right onto that grout.

Give it a chance to work its magic for at least 10 minutes, then go in with a soft-bristled brush and tackle those stains with a gentle circular motion.

The nasty marks should lift off without a fuss. After you've banished the stains, splash the grout with some clean water and pat it down with a microfibre cloth to dry. By now, your grout tiles will be looking bright, white, and like new again.

John advised: "To prevent future staining, consider sealing your grout. This creates a protective barrier against moisture and grime."
