A blast from the past: Double Diamond bitter is returning to British pubs

One of the most famous beers from yesteryear will be hopping back into British boozers. Drinkers with a taste for nostalgia will be able to sup Double Diamond, which used to be a familiar sight in pubs across the land.

The pale ale’s bright red logo with two large Ds was instantly recognisable, and almost as famous as its TV slogans: “Double Diamond works wonders” and “You’re only here for the beer”.

In the 1950s, that may have been true as it was the country’s best-selling bottled beer. In the 60s and 70s it was one of the most successful draught keg bitters.

Yet by the 80s, competition from lager and other beer brands hit sales. Now, brewer Allsopp’s, which first made Double Diamond in 1876 at its Staffordshire brewery in Burton upon Trent, has announced: “It’s back, and it still works wonders.”

It said: “After months of research and trial recipes to make it perfect, we have relaunched Double Diamond. Revived as a 3.8% pale ale, it is a delicious, easy-going sessionable draft beer coming very soon to your favourite pubs.”

Drinkers at Leeds’ Kirkstall Bridge pub were impressed, calling it “stunning”. Other old beers to be relaunched include Hofmeister, Kestrel Pilsner and Watneys Party Seven keg.
